Klaus made a mistake, the Petrova doppelgangers appeared not every five hundred years but every hundred instead. Most have lived normal human lives, but the extension of the Petrova line meant that more and more doppelganger appeared every century. Now there are three in existence, Katherine Pierce, a human, Elena Gilbert, a vampire, and Alexandra Pierce, a werewolf. Alexandra is so far unaware of her linage as a Petrova, but years of being called Katherine have set her on a journey to find out why. Now she is in Mystic Falls, about to be entangled in one of the most supernaturally dangerous towns of all.

Yet another startling discovery has been made, the spell that transformed the Mikaelsons into vampires had an unforeseen side effect. Tatia Petrova’s blood, a doppelganger’s blood, made them into doppelgangers as well as vampires, a type of revenge from Nature. Now a doppelganger, one of each of the Original vampires as well as of each vampire from their bloodline, appears every century with their life linked to that of the vampire that they resemble. It is an opportunity, provided by Nature, to kill an Original and their bloodlines, bypassing the usual constraints that come with that mission. But can the many enemies of the Original Family really kill an innocent human merely to destroy an immortal vampire? Will they condemn hundreds of vampires to death simply to destroy their enemy?
